10 Ideas to Help Make Packing Easier

Anyone who has ever moved knows  how stressful packing up your belongs can be. Even when you are full of joy in moving to a new home, the process can be very trying. If you find yourself faced with this task, here are some ideas that can make the process as easy as possible.

  • Gather Boxes – Before you spend a dime on any packing boxes, you should first check with the grocery stores, hardware stores, and liquor stores in your area. You will be surprised at how many boxes you can collect simply by asking.
  • Packing supplies- Consider using towels to protect fragile items. This can save money on bubble wrap.  Newspaper works great  for other things. Perhaps your local newspaper will let you pick up end rolls of the paper they use  when printing the daily paper.
  • Purchase good quality packing tape. This is not a place to scrimp. You want the tape to stick, the boxes to stay closes and the contents to remain in the boxes. Don’t be afraid to use the tape.
  • Label Your Boxes – To ensure that your boxes are unloaded and placed in the correct areas of your new home, you should label each box on each side. This will ensure that there are no questions as to which room a particular box should go in. Labeling the contents of each box will also make it easier to locate items that you may need right away.
  • Get Rid of Junk – While you are packing you should determine which items you really need to keep and which items you can let go of. This is a great step in removing any unwanted clutter from your home. Having a yard sale prior to your move is a great way to get rid of any unwanted items you may have.
  • Don’t Pack Boxes Too Heavy – When you are packing, it is highly recommended that you use your larger sized boxes for lighter items. Your shoes and clothing items should be packed in medium sized boxes and books should be packed in smaller boxes. This is a great way to ensure that there are not any 200 pound boxes of books.
  • Use Your Space – When you’re packing you should not forget that you can place items in empty coolers, laundry baskets, suitcases and other items you may have lying around. This is valuable space that can help you save boxes for other items.
  • Focus – Packing one room at a time will help keep you from becoming distracted and moving from room to room. It will also ensure that items that belong together remain together and fewer items are lost during the move.
  • Get Help- Family members and friends can help get things packed up. Have a packing party… Pizza and drinks… breakdown in teams and each team work in a room.  More hands make lighter work.
  • Make a check list to keep yourself organized. List all the tasks by various room. Keep the tasks a reasonable size so that you can check off something everyday. This will keep the sense of overwhelm away.  If you feel that you need professional help it is still a good idea to have a list of tasks that need to be accomplished. It will help to keep the project moving forward.
