Maine Street Brunswick could officially be “Historic”

The section of Maine Street between Pleasant and Mason Streets could be considered a “Historic District” on the National Register of Historic Places!

Annie Robinson of Morton Real Estate and Claudia Knox of the Brunswick Downtown Association are leading the efforts to have Maine Street officially become historic. Brunswick currently has three separate historic districts and several individual properties on the Historic Register. “This will be the first one that will honor and value the core of the public and retail sector of our town.”-A. Robinson.

The National Register recognizes properties that are significant in American culture, history, architecture, and engineering. This designation will allow the town and property owners to be eligible to apply for state and federal grants to enhance historic buildings within the district. Businesses stand to benefit from these tax incentives available to assist them in maintaining these properties. If using Federal or State assistance, business owners will need to comply with rules of the historic register, however, building owners can make any changes they wish if not using federal funding. Recognizing Maine Street as Historic will increase visibility to our already wonderful town and give us bragging rights!

There have been public hearings and notices sent to property owners in the proposed district. At this time the nomination is being researched and prepared.

We are so fortunate to have the Brunswick Downtown Association here to support our local businesses and residents. The Brunswick Downtown Association is a member-driven, action oriented organization of businesses and citizens who work together for a better community. Their goal is to develop and maintain a vital, hospitable and lively downtown: a location for congregation, socializing and commerce and a source of pride for residents and neighbors. The BDA coordinates downtown improvement projects, sponsors public programs and organizes special events. We are a proud supporter of this great organization!

On Friday March 15th, The Maine Downtown Institute will be in Bath discussing best practices in planning and sustainable design while training the leaders to boost their local downtown economy!
